Summer Reading '17 for the Elementary Schools

A Message for Fourth Grade Students and Families

Dear Fourth Grade Students and Families,

Our fourth grade students have been working hard all year to grow as readers and writers and summer is a great time to continue reading and maintain the literacy skills gained throughout the year.  Students who read during the summer return to school ready to continue their learning without interruption. Educators identify summer learning loss as a challenge when starting off the new school year.

This year, students entering grade 5 are strongly encouraged to read and enjoy a specific title in addition to the ones on the Suggested Summer Reading lists published by the Attleboro Public Library. We strongly suggest that students read the book this summer, and, if helpful, record ideas about the book as they read and reflect on the events. There will also be an assignment in September where students will select from a menu of choices to share their thoughts and ideas about the book and explore how it connects to our district wide theme of Build A Better World.

‚óŹ       Incoming grade five students will read Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea

Each student will receive a copy of the book from school to borrow for the summer, and we are confident that the students will enjoy reading the title provided.  More information about Because of Mr. Terupt can be found at by selecting “books” under the “topics” tab and then using the “find books” option.

It is very important to keep track of the book. Students are expected to return the book in September.  Any student that does not return the book will be asked to pay $6.00 to cover the cost of the book.

Thank you for your support as we encourage summer reading in the Attleboro Public Schools. Together, we can support our Vision to be the center of a community united around education, where all stakeholders value and participate in our collective success.
